The Zapper corrects some problems found in QuarkXPress after the program shipped. The extension is easy to use. Place it in your QuarkXPress folder on the same level with the program and launch QuarkXPress. You need to do this only once. You can then remove the extension from the QuarkXPress folder.
Even if you have already obtained a Zapper extension from Quark Support Services or via a network, you should run this Zapper again. This version contains a few new fixes. Running it again will in no way damage an already-zapped program.
The Zapper corrects the following problems:
- Certain pixel-based PICTs (e.g., those generated by a Datacopy scanner) were printed improperly.
- Bitmaps contained in rotated PICTs sometimes did not print correctly.
Some Adobe Illustrator PICTs were not scaled correctly when printed.
- Certain scanners produce TIFF files that are not compliant with the TIFF 5.0 specification. These files did not display or print correctly. This problem was fixed by ignoring the faulty data in these files.
- Suppress Printout (Item:Modify) did not work for anchored boxes.
- Anchored boxes could be positioned improperly in justified text.
- When Unlimited Downloadable Fonts was checked (File:Page Setup), some fonts were either replaced by Courier or their styles were lost. This problem can also be caused by a bug in LaserWriter driver version 5.2. We recommend that you use LaserWriter driver version 6.0 or 6.0.1.
- Pasting boxes into a library on a Mac SE or Mac Plus could cause a System error.
- Color pictures were not handled properly on an SE.
- A picture file locked through Get Info (File menu) in the Finder would be reported "missing" in the Picture Usage and Missing/Modified Pictures dialog boxes.
- When Keep with Next paragraph or Keep Lines Together (Style:Formats) was applied in large documents, pages could be displayed blank, and the message "This document was created with other versions of some fonts. It will be reflowed using this System's fonts," was sometimes given.
- PostScript Escape font was not supported properly.
- Polygons in PICT pictures with zero framing (pen width set to zero) caused a PostScript error.
- Rotated bitmap pictures sometimes were printed with bands of white.
- PhotoShop-generated EPS pictures with the Include Transfer Functions option checked printed on every plate during color separation.
- FreeHand-generated EPS line art pictures printed improperly when the Invert Image option was checked (File:Page Setup).
- The inside portion of characters with the outline type style applied occasionally printed on inappropriate plates during color separation.
- Courier characters with the bold type style applied printed doubly bold.
- If the Suitcase II option for "updating font menus when font suitcases are opened/closed" was checked, and QuarkXPress was running, opening or closing any suitcase file would cause a System error.
- The display of the Font sub-menu was very slow on an SE or Plus with a large number of installed fonts.
- Save Page as EPS generated improper files.
- Libraries contained problems relating to labels and dragging entries between libraries.
- If a PICT contained text with a white color, some objects in the PICT sometimes did not print.
